Matrices & linear algebra

Use an explicit matrix when you want matrix multiplication, inverse or determinant. Ordinary nested lists retain list behavior.

Find it

Expressions

Try it step by step

  1. Wrap a rectangular list of rows in matrix(...).
  2. Multiply compatible matrices with * or matmul.
  3. Use an inverse only for a square, nonsingular matrix.
  4. Inspect the typeset result and any dimension or singularity message.

Examples to try

Each card is one input. For definitions, enter the cards in order. Formula-only cards belong in the tool described above.

Construct a 2×2 matrix.

Matrix multiplication.

The inverse of this nonsingular matrix.

Options explained

matrix
Creates an explicit real or complex matrix with up to 16 rows and 16 columns.
Multiplication / powers
Matrix multiplication requires matching inner dimensions. Integer powers of square matrices use matrix products.
Inverse / negative powers
and use a matrix inverse for explicit matrices; a singular matrix has no inverse.
Determinant / elimination
Supported determinant and elimination operations help solve linear-algebra problems.
Nested-list distinction
[[1,2],[3,4]] is a list of lists until you explicitly construct a matrix. List arithmetic can be element-wise.
